It’s your first time at a music festival and you want to bust out some seriously sick moves to show these punks and hippies what your really made of! The only thing is, you’re not sure how to approach this. Do you just say f the world and go straight into interpretive dance (that summer class you took that one year is really going to pay for itself right now)? or do you play it cool with the head bob and give a little sway?
Step 1: Asses the situation
Ok ok, so you’re new to this. Maybe give a little look around and see what the crowd is doing. Sometimes certain types of music have certain dances. Such as moshing for punk rock or skanking for ska. Both are super fun and easy to pick up, so keep your eye out for it. You don’t have to re-invent the wheel here people, just take what everyone else is doing and make it better: make it your own.
Step 2: Ignore the situation
So you assessed the situation and feel like they’re not giving this band the credit that is due to them. This has now become your personal responsibility to rock out hard enough that the band knows its worth! If this is the band you’ve been listening to since 8th grade, and you’ve ultimately fallen in love and have been broken up with to this record, that’s some serious stuff. Don’t be afraid to let loose and do what just feels right. worse comes to worse, you’re terrible dance moves will shoot you to YouTube stardom!
Step 3: Dance with a group of friends
Solidarity is the answer when dancing at music festivals. One guy chilling out to some folk rock might look like a stoned homeless person, but a whole group chilling out listening to a folk rock band is a completely different story! If you can get all your friends to dance with you in whatever crazy fashion you choose, then the attention isn’t solely on you. It’s on your group, and i’m sure you all look awesome!
Now you know how to dance at a music festival! It’s not hard to dance at music festivals, especially if you have your friends there to groove with! Just remember to make it yours and have an awesome time! Statistics probably would show that no matter where you are at a festival, there’s probably an embarrassing dad dancing somwhere withing your proximity taking all the attention away from you anyway.
