Back in July, Kieran Hebden—better known as Four Tet—told Twitter he was hoping for a call-up to remix the latest Eric Prydz weapon, “Opus.” Now heads have turned again with the fulfillment of that wish. While the Prydz original was already one of the year’s headiest releases, Hebden’s 10-minute interpretation is its own breed of warehouse epic.
Despite what might seem on paper like an unlikely meeting of minds, Hedben offsets the propulsive drive of the original with a deeper vibe. The resulting remix sees the UK producer locking himself firmly into club mode, in contrast to the more restrained and cerebral sounds found on his Morning/Evening studio album earlier this year. His interpretation of “Opus” is content to leave many of Prydz’s original ideas intact, including that drawn-out, mind-bending buildup.
Annie Mac was suitably breathless when she aired the remix on her BBC Radio 1 show on Saturday (“I feel like I’ve been launched into outer space”), while Hebden seems unconcerned about any raised eyebrows. “Still get maddest buzz when I hear one of my productions on the radio,” he said on Twitter. “Never gets old.” Get into it below.
