Drastic musical exploration has been a recurring theme in the trance scene as of late. The past twelve months have seen John O’Callaghan diving into progressive, Seven Lions venturing further into psy-trance, and Paul Oakenfold releasing a slew of future house re-works. 2015 is drawing to a close, yet experimentation with different genres is showing no sign of slowing. Enter Markus Schulz with the revival of his Dakota alias; named after a club in Canada that inspired the Unicorn Slayer to don his darker identity, “Cathedral (Montreal)” is the first release seen under Dakota in over a year. Capturing the afterhours culture in Montreal, “Cathedral” is a throbbing tech house piece offering complex synth riffs and delicate drum accents, allowing a palatable journey to the finish. Tech house is a significant change of pace from Schulz’ typical trance fare, but no less brilliant; “Cathedral” sounds as if it could easily come out of an Adam Beyer set, and establishes Dakota as a force to be reckoned with in that scene.
