How To Dance At A Music Festival

by Festival June 01, 2015

It’s your first time at a music festival and you want to bust out some seriously sick moves to show these punks and hippies what your really made of! The only thing is, you’re not sure how to approach this. Do you just say f the world and go straight into interpretive dance (that summer class you took that one year is really going to pay for itself right now)? or do you play it cool with the head bob and give a little sway?

awww yeahhhhh

Step 1: Asses the situation

vibe

Ok ok, so you’re new to this. Maybe give a little look around and see what the crowd is doing. Sometimes certain types of music have certain dances. Such as moshing for punk rock or skanking for ska. Both are super fun and easy to pick up, so keep your eye out for it. You don’t have to re-invent the wheel here people, just take what everyone else is doing and make it better: make it your own.

Step 2: Ignore the situation

jv

So you assessed the situation and feel like they’re not giving this band the credit that  is due to them. This has now become your personal responsibility to rock out hard enough that the band knows its worth! If this is the band you’ve been listening to since 8th grade, and you’ve ultimately fallen in love and have been broken up with to this record, that’s some serious stuff. Don’t be afraid to let loose and do what just feels right. worse comes to worse, you’re terrible dance moves will shoot you to YouTube stardom!

Is HBO Working On A Scripted EDM Show?

by Festival July 10, 2014

HBO is gearing up to create a show about the rise of an EDM DJ.  It’s said to be a mix of “Entourage” and “Project X”. Does this mean that the EDM culture is becoming too mainstream?   For some, EDM means dancing in the sun for three days in a row. Maybe even indulging in all kinds of hedonistic extras among a crowd of 200,000 people. For others, EDM can be a very irritating word that just commercializes house music.

Irvine Welsh, a co-writer of the show told inthemix recently “We’ve been working on stuff and trying to get something together”. It’s a comedy about the rise of a DJ through the world of electronic dance music, from humble origins to becoming a superstar DJ. The idea is to make it very character driven as well – you’ve got [touchstones] like Human Traffic and Project X and that kind of territory, and Entourage is another one too, you know, about the people that are around them.” If you don’t know who Irvin Welsh is, he’s a Scottish writer behind many drug-lit books, including TrainspottingGlue, and a short story collection called Ecstacy. He has also dabbled in the electronic dance scene since the 90’s.

New High Tech RFID Wristbands for Lollapalooza 2014

by Festival July 07, 2014

New high tech RFID wristbands are slowly but surely showing up at festivals around the globe this year. Earlier this summer Bonnaroo used RFID wristbands as a way to combat counterfeit badges. Next month, they’ll show up at another huge festival too.Lollapalooza is offering its festival goers a new way to pay for food and drinks.

A small RFID (radio frequency identification) chip is being placed into each wristband that everyone entering the festival will have to wear. All Lolla2014 attendees will have the option to enter their credit card info online prior to the opening day of the event. Restaurant and drink vendors will have point-of-sale systems set up that will allow each bracelet user to scan their bands on a pad and type in a pin code to pay for each item.

The tech-enabled wristbands will also work offline. Whew!  We all know that unless one of the big cellular companies like AT&T or Verizon sets up a mobile tower a good signal is virtually hard to find at any  festival. Internet can be equally as spotty.  Merchants trying to complete digital transactions via the Internet aren’t exactly doomed.

What The Hell Is Yacht Week

by Issen Alibris July 02, 2014

What the hell is Yacht Week? I am sure you’ve heard those words once or twice this summer already.  No, it’s not some semester at sea program where you “earn college  credits” while living on a boat. And it definitely isn’t where baby boomers meet up in the south of France to race their luxury boats.

Yacht Week is a seven day boat tour of seaside hot spots. There are three routes.  The British Virgin Islands, Thailand and the Mediterranean. The most popular route is the Mediterranean which includes Ibiza, Greece, and Croatia.

Started in 2005 by Swedes William Wenkel and Erik Biörklund, Yacht Week has grown from friends having fun on a summer holiday into a multi-million  dollar operation .  In fact, thanks to a 2009 YouTube video gone viral –it’s become a global phenomenon . Global party monsters (20% are American)  are snapping up tickets faster than you can say…vodka. How does it work?

The band Vampire Weekend has been gaining popularity in the music scene for the last couple of years. Their upbeat and clever songs make them a lot of fun to listen to, and they finally are becoming somewhat of a household name. For those of you who think you don’t know them, the opening song in the movie Step Brothers is Vampire Weekends “A-Punk “. If you don’t know what Step Brothers is, you can call me Dragon and we’ll never be friends…unless you like doing karate in your garage.

Very few people know how hilarious and insightful Vampire Weekends lead singer Ezra Koenig (@arzE)  is on Twitter.

Here are some examples of why Ezra is awesome and you need to follow him ASAP.
